Example Stimuli: Transparent Text on Textured Background

Example stimuli used to study the readability of transparent texton textured backgrounds.

We used 3 background textures, 2 types of transparency, and 2 textcontrast levels.

Backgrounds:

periodic texture: "culture pattern"
periodic texture: "wave pattern"
a plain "texture" of equal luminance

Transparency Type:

Additive (text lighter than background)
Multiplicative (text darker than background)

Text contrast:

dark grey text (35% contrast)
medium grey text (15% contrast)

Click on the combination described below in order to view an exampleof that text/background combination. Each of these does have a targetword inserted into the middle paragraph of text. Some text/targetword examples are identical in target word placement for theseexamples. In the actual experiment there were no trials which hadidentical text / target word placements.

The images will display correctly if the screen gamma is 1.262 andthe minimum contrast on the screen is 3.65%.
