IRB Assignment (#2)

For this assignment you will prepare your IRB form for submission. See the attached handouts for the IRB application form, thedocumentation guidelines for informed consent, and the IRB informedconsent checklist.

When completing your IRB, you will need to retype all the forminformation starting with the date field. Fill in your informationas requested for each form field. You will need to attach copies ofyour consent form, and the debriefing form if needed. In theresearch protocol section (item #9), other materials should bedescribed with enough detail that they can be evaluated.

The projected time period of the project should be 4 months.

After completing a draft of the form, have Dr. Scharff review itfor completeness and clarity. Then, schedule an appointment with afaculty consultant whose expertise is in an area related to yourtopic. See Dr. Scharff for faculty consultant suggestions ifnecessary.

When meeting with your faculty consultant, bring a copy of yourIRB form and all of your references for your project. You should askif your faculty consultant would like to have a copy of the IRB draftto review prior to your meeting. At the meeting discuss the projectwith the faculty consultant and see if they have any importantsuggestions to help improve your project. These suggestions mightinvolve adding some pertinent references, tweaking your design insome way, etc. Meet with Dr. Scharff regarding these suggestions andany necessary revisions to your project. You do not necessarily haveto follow all suggestions, but some may be more crucial to having agood project and design.

The final IRB is due on Friday, February 3rd at the beginning ofclass. On Monday and Wednesday in class (Jan 30th and Feb 1st),Vikki and I will be available to give you feedback. You should bringyour draft of the IRB for our review to class on Monday Jan 30th. Ideally, following class on Monday you will be ready to schedule ameeting with your faculty consultant.

Vikki and Dr. Scharff will grade / review your final draft, and ifit is complete and in good form (grammar etc.), we will have you goahead and make the necessary copies to submit to IRB. Otherwise, wemay require you make some revisions prior to copying and submittingto IRB. In order to finish your project this semester in a timelymanner, it is important to submit the IRB as soon as possible.
